Electric cars to get green number plates

Added: 06 July 2020

Electric cars will dominate the future roads of the UK. The Department of Transport has already vowed to ban the sale of all new internal combustion engines cars from 2035 in order to meet the UK’s goals of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

Incentives are now being introduced to encourage drivers to switch to electric cars. One of the latest incentives is the introduction of a ‘green number plate’ on all electric vehicles.

Marking electric cars with a green number plate will make them easier to identify. This will pave the way for the government and local authorities to introduce perks such as free parking in certain areas and exemption from emission-zone charges, helping to further boost the appeal of electric cars.

These green number plates won’t be entirely green – so that the registration number is still clearly visible, they will simply have a green vertical flash on the left side. All new electric vehicles will be fitted with these plates and existing electric car owners will be able to get their current number plates replaced.

Green number plates are expected to be introduced this autumn. Exact dates as to when they are expected to appear are yet to be confirmed.

The idea has already been put into practice in Ontario Canada and has been shown to be a success. Vehicles with green number plates in Ontario are currently allowed free access to toll lanes and car pool lanes. It has led to an increase in electric car purchases across Ontario.

Beyond simply offering perks to electric car drivers that help to cut costs and provide convenience, it is believed that green number plates may eventually become a badge of honour that people will want to acquire simply for the status of being seen as a ‘clean driver’.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has been supportive of the proposal to introduce green number plates, stating: A green recovery is key to helping us achieve our net zero carbon commitments while also promoting economic growth. Green number plates could unlock a number of incentives for drivers and increase awareness of cleaner vehicles on our roads, showing people that a greener transport future is within our grasp.’

All in all, it’s exciting news for electric car owners as it suggests the beginning of a new wave of financial benefits. As electric cars become cheaper to make and cheaper to sell, more people will likely be making the shift to electric vehicles knowing that they can save money and save the environment.
