Types of EV/Hybrid

BEV (Battery-electric EV) A vehicle powered only by electricity, and also known as ‘pure’ or 100% electric cars. The vehicle is charged by an external power source, i.e. at a charge point. They do not produce any tailpipe emissions. Examples include the Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Renault Zoe and Kia Soul.

PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid EV) - A vehicle which has a battery, electric drive motor and an internal combustion engine (ICE). It can be driven using the ICE, or the electric drive motor, or both, and can be recharged from an external power source. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Audi e-tron and VW Golf GTE are all examples.

E-REV (Extended Range EV) These are a version of plug-in hybrids. An E-REV combines a battery, an electric drive motor and a small petrol or diesel generator. The electric motor always drives the wheels with the ICE acting as a generator when the battery is depleted. An example of an E-REV is the BMW i3 range-extender.

Charging Your EV

Today’s EVs usually come with two charging options, if you have a parking space or driveway outside your home, you can charge overnight using a traditional plug socket, alternatively you can use one of the rapidly growing network of public charging points. Public chargepoints vary as to how quickly they can charge an electric vehicle.

The speed your vehicle recharges will be affected by the chargepoint speed available and also how fast the vehicle itself can recharge. When buying an EV you should find out its maximum charging speed. Depending on the vehicle and its connector types, you may be able to top-up at fast and rapid chargepoints but not take full advantage of their maximum charging speed.

Rapid chargepoints

These are the quickest way to recharge a vehicle, typically recharging a vehicle to 80% in around 30 minutes. However, rapid chargepoints are the most expensive to use (similar to expensive petrol or diesel fuel at motorway services), and they cannot be installed at home.

Slow chargepoints

These are often the cheapest to use and are suitable when vehicles are parked for several hours, such as during working hours or overnight.

Fast Chargepoints

Fast chargepoints are a happy medium and ideal when vehicles are parked for a few hours.
